Japanese Lantern is an improved form of the popular Japanese flowering cherry Fugenzo. It features an intense display of double flowers (each containing more than 30 petals). The flowers hang in clusters - said to resemble lanterns.
The scented double blossom changes colour, beginning a creamy-green colour, then becoming pure white, then taking on pink hues. It also has some frost resistance.
The young leaves are a coppery-green, turning green over the summer, and then taking on orange tints in the autumn.
Like its relative Fugenzo, Japanese Lantern is an attractive medium-sized tree with a graceful spreading habit.
